Nantes, France

 Dinning Out

You will find the exceptionally fresh and very varied products from the valley.  Those fresh walleye, salmon, shad, and elver from the Loire river, are ready to be on your plates.  And you don't need to go far - since oysters, whelks, scampi, scallops, crabs, and spider crabs as well as shrimps are freshly fished from the Atlantic.

The region is full of market gardens where carrots, tomatoes, corn salad, leeks, lettuce, cabbages, turnips, green peas and more are easily found.  But don't miss heading to the famous vineyards of Muscadet and Gros Plan!

Nantes' recipes emphasize simplicity and flavor.  Also, try out the gorgeous grilled Brière or Grandlieu eels, frogs' legs with parsley, garlic and white wine and duck cooked in muscadet.

 Entertainment

When the sun goes down, you'll find lots of cafes and pubs, many with live music and fun people on place du Bouffay, place du Pilori and rue Kervagen while a younger crowd heads to rue Scribe.

Catch some live blues, jazz, or rock at L'Universe Café at 16 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau, or techno and disco at Quai West, 3 quai François-Mitterrand.  Head to Le Tie Break, 1 rue des Petites-Ecuries if you expect to find a great piano bar with a dance floor and occasional jazz concerts.

Balapapa, 24 quai François-Mitterrand has a real cabaret feel.  The over-30 crowd should visit the vintage 1970s disco L'Evasion, 3 rue de l'Emery.  And other popular discos are Le Duplex, place Emile-Zola; Le Royal Club Privé, 7 rue des Salorges; and Wilton's Club, 23 rue de Rieux - make sure not to wear jeans to any of these places.

Gays and lesbians may find Le Petit Marais, 15 rue Kervégan their favorite.  Finally,  Le Temps d'Amier, 14 rue Alexandre-Fourny is mixed and gay-friendly, attracting a sophisticated crowd.
